Das Haus am Barthweg wurde in den 1970er Jahren als Teil einer kleinen Reihenhaussiedlung erbaut und über die Jahre mehrfach umgebaut. Zuletzt wurde vor wenigen Jahren das Dach erneuert, die Gebäudehülle gedämmt und im Inneren ein Umbau begonnen, doch nicht abgeschlossen. Nun sollte es, mit sehr begrenztem Budget, das neue Zuhause für eine vierköpfige Familie werden. Das Projekt ist ein Versuch den etwas verbauten Bestand mit minimalen Mitteln in etwas radikal neu(-altes) zu transformieren, während alle technischen Installationen komplett erneuert werden mussten.

Built in the 1970s as part of a small townhouse development, the house on Barthweg has undergone several conversions over the years. Most recently, the roof was replaced, the building envelope was insulated, and interior remodeling was started but not finished. Now, with a very limited budget, the house was to become the new home for a family of four. The goal of this project was to transform the somewhat tinkered building into something radically old-new using simple means while completely renewing all technical installations.

Mit möglichst wenigen strukturellen Eingriffen wird die Enge des Hauses aufgebrochen und eine neue Großzügigkeit im Inneren hergestellt: Das Bad wird mit der Fassade verbunden und so direkt belichtet und belüftet. Im Erdgeschoss wird der Korridor ganz aufgelöst, die Küche wird mit dem Wohnraum verbunden und gleichzeitig zum Eingangsraum des Hauses. Im Obergeschoss wird der Flur zum bespielbaren Zwischenraum mit Tageslicht und verbindet die beiden Kinderzimmer.

With as few structural interventions as possible, the narrowness of the house is broken up, creating a sense of spaciousness in the interior. The bathroom is connected to the façade and is thus naturally ventilated and lit. On the ground floor, the corridor dissolves into the living room. The kitchen opens to the living room and becomes the entryway of the house. On the upper floor, the corridor becomes a playable, daylight-filled space that extends to the façade and connects the two kids’ rooms.

Raumtrennungen werden aufgelöst und alle Räume kommen an die Fassade. Der Ausbau ist in Teilen so einfach und roh wie möglich gehalten, um gegebenenfalls in Zukunft noch von der Bauherrschaft selbst komplettiert oder weitergebaut zu werden. In anderen Teilen werden Einbauten spezifisch in den Bestand eingepasst.

Partitions are being removed and rooms opened up to the façade. In some areas, the interior is kept simple and unfinished so the client can complete or expand it in the future. In other areas, fixtures are being tailored specifically to fit the existing structure.
