Der Einwöchige Workshop mit Studierenden der TU Graz startet von der Frage: Was ist eine Öffnung? Ohne Öffnung kein Haus, keine Stadt, keine Architektur. Auf dem Maßstab des Gebäudes oft in einer Wand oder Mauer. Doch auch in der Stadt und in der Landschaft gibt es Öffnungen. Was machen Öffnungen? Öffnungen können verbinden: Das Fenster lässt das Licht hinein und den Blick hinaus. Öffnungen können Schutz bieten: Die Ameise verkriecht sich in der Mauerritze. Öffnungen können trennen: Die Strasse als Öffnung im Stadtgrundiss trennt das Haus vom Haus, das Tal trennt den Berg vom Berg.

The one-week workshop with students from Graz University of Technology begins with the following question: What is an opening? Without openings, there would be no houses, no cities, no architecture. On the scale of a building, they are often found in a wall. But openings also exist in the city and in the landscape. What do openings do? Openings can connect: A window lets light in and allows a view out. Openings can offer protection: An ant hides in a crack in the wall. Openings can separate: The street, as an opening in the city layout, separates one house from another; the valley separates one mountain from another

Gemeinsam haben wir die Performanz bestehender Öffnungen untersucht und nach ihrem verborgenen Potenzial gefragt. Ausgangspunkt war jeweils eine konkrete Öffnung, von der aus neue Perspektiven entwickelt wurden: Was wäre, wenn hier (k)eine Öffnung wäre, oder wenn sie anders gedacht würde? Daraus entstanden Erzählungen, die in kleine, präzise Interventionen übersetzt wurden. Für die Schlusspräsentation wurden portable Objekte entworfen, die die Performanz einer bestehenden Öffnung als performatives Mock-Up verändert haben.

Together, we examined the performance of existing openings and asked about their hidden potential. Starting point was always a specific opening, from which new perspectives were developed: What if there were (not) an opening here, or if it were conceived differently? These led to stories that were translated into small, precise interventions. For the final presentation, portable objects were designed that changed the performance of an existing opening as a performative mock-up.
